What is a Laparoscopy?
How advanced laparoscopic surgery is performed and what recovery involves.
How It Is Performed
A Laparoscopy is performed under General Anaesthetic. The procedure involves:
Introducing gas into the abdomen
Placing a camera (laparoscope) through the umbilical port
Inserting instruments through 5mm incisions (other ports)
- Ovaries
- Fallopian Tubes
- Pelvic side walls (beds in which the ovaries lie)
- Pouch of Douglas (base of the pelvis)
- Bladder
- Appendix
Procedures Performed
Many surgical procedures can be completed during the laparoscopy, such as:
Removal of Ovarian Cysts
Excision of Endometriosis
Division of Adhesions
Hysterectomy
- Tubal Ligation (Sterilisation)
Recovery & Aftercare
At the end of the procedure a drain is placed to allow gas to escape and most patients stay in hospital overnight.
