Pelvic Floor Repair

Dr Jenny Cook  |  Sydney Gynaecologist & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon

Specialised Surgery for Pelvic Floor Prolapse

My advanced laparoscopic surgical fellowship was completed in a tertiary referral unit for complex pelvic floor prolapse. I have extensive training and experience in a wide range of pelvic floor procedures.

Older vaginal mesh kits are no longer performed and have been withdrawn from the market. Instead, safe and effective laparoscopic and vaginal techniques are now used to restore support and improve quality of life.

Surgical Options

Safe, effective procedures to treat vaginal prolapse and restore support.

Laparoscopic Mesh Sacral Colposuspension

This procedure is considered the gold standard for vaginal apex prolapse.
Few gynaecologists perform this advanced laparoscopic technique.

How it works:
  • The bladder is reflected off the vagina
  • The vaginal apex is carefully defined
  • A Y-shaped sling is sutured to the front and back of the vaginal apex
  • The base of the sling is fixed to a strong bony landmark (sacral promontory)
  • The peritoneum (tissue layer) is closed over the mesh
Procedure details:
  • Takes about 1 hour
  • A pelvic drain is placed
  • Hospital stay: 1–2 days
  • Rest recommended: 2 weeks to allow healing
  • Follow-up: 10 days, to review pictures and monitor progress

Anterior Repair (Cystocele Repair)

  • Corrects prolapse of the bladder (cystocele)
  • Performed by invagination (folding in) of the front vaginal wall
  • Procedure time: about 30 minutes
  • Hospital stay: overnight
  • Follow-up: 2 weeks

Posterior Repair (Rectocele Repair)

  • Corrects prolapse of the rectum (rectocele)
  • Performed by invagination of the back vaginal wall
  • Procedure time: about 30 minutes
  • Hospital stay: overnight
  • Follow-up: 2 weeks
