Tubal Reversal

Dr Jenny Cook  |  Sydney Gynaecologist & Advanced Laparoscopic Surgeon

Reversing Permanent Contraception

Laparoscopic Tubal Re-anastomosis — also called tubal reversal — is a specialised procedure to reconnect the Fallopian Tubes.

It is designed for women who have previously had clips placed for permanent contraception but now wish to restore fertility.

A healthcare professional discusses health concerns with a female patient in a cozy clinic.
Tubal reversal is delicate surgery – but with the right approach, pregnancy can be possible again.

How it Works?

Tubal reversal offers a chance for natural conception after permanent contraception

Pre-Operative Assessment

Before performing a tubal reversal, I arrange a full fertility work-up to make sure spontaneous conception is possible after the operation. This includes:

  • Hormonal profile

  • Pelvic ultrasound

  • Semen analysis

How the Procedure is Performed

During laparoscopic tubal re-anastomosis (tubal reversal):

  • The damaged or clipped ends of the Fallopian Tubes are carefully removed

  • The healthy ends are reconnected using fine sutures

  • The surgery takes about 60 minutes

  • Patients usually stay in hospital overnight

Recovery & Aftercare

After your tubal reversal:

  • You will be reviewed at 10 days to discuss laparoscopic pictures and pathology results

  • A recovery period of about 3 months is recommended before attempting conception

  • This allows the Fallopian Tubes to heal fully and reduces the risk of complications
