Specialised Surgery to Support Pregnancy

A laparoscopic cervical cerclage is a specialised procedure performed in women with a short cervix and a risk of cervical incompetence. This condition can lead to pregnancy loss after 16 weeks, known as mid-trimester pregnancy loss.

In rare cases, the procedure may also be required after cervical cancer surgery, when the entire cervix has been removed.

Laparoscopic cerclage can provide vital support for your pregnancy and a better chance of carrying safely to term.

What's Involved?

A procedure to reduce the risk of pregnancy loss.

How the Procedure is Performed

The operation is performed using laparoscopy (keyhole surgery):

  • The bladder is gently reflected off the cervix

  • A synthetic tape is placed at the level of the internal os (the entry of the cervical canal into the uterus)

  • The tape is securely tied at this point to keep the uterus closed during pregnancy

This creates a strong support for the pregnancy and reduces the risk of miscarriage or preterm labour.

Hospital Stay & Recovery

  • You will usually stay in hospital overnight

  • A follow-up appointment at 10 days will be arranged to review laparoscopic pictures and check recovery

  • Delivery will be by Caesarean section

  • The suture can safely remain in place for subsequent pregnancies

Advantages of Laparoscopic Cerclage

Compared with the traditional vaginal approach, laparoscopic cervical cerclage offers several benefits:

  • The suture is placed higher, closer to the uterus

  • Lower risk of erosion, chronic discharge, and infection

  • The same suture can remain in place for multiple pregnancies

  • Minimally invasive approach with small incisions and faster recovery
